Bio-HACK# 4 | PHYSICAL HEALTH

PHYSICAL HEALTH.

Anything you do to change or influence your biology is considered a bio-hack, Physical exercise is part of your diet. Being on a diet, or lack there of will influence your physique as well as your bio-chemistry. For some, exercising one’s body daily is essential to wake up. It’s the first thing they feed their body. Many people wake up at the crack of dawn, or before to go for a run/walk,yoga, tai-chi or martial arts practice, football or basketball and tennis. Early morning risers most commonly like to exercise outdoors. The weather doesn’t matter to them. They are intrinsically motivated to get up early and move before breakfast. The early bird catches the worm! So these “Habituals” don’t want to miss a workout due to work and other commitments. They commit to getting it done before the madness of the day begins. It’s meditation in motion.

If you have the luxury of time, you then can exercise at anytime during the day. Gyms and Pilates, yoga and martial arts studios are great indoor exercise places.

Then the post-work and school crew normally begin their physical exercises after 6pm. A jog and run in the park, or a humble leisurely stroll after dinner are perfect ways to reflect on your day, or spend time with your partner, and burn calories and keep you insulin sensitive. Kids or adult sports clubs are a great way to learn something new and make friends. Both are essential at any stage of life. Movement and social connection keeps your brain healthy. Physical movement helps sustain dopamine levels in the brain making you essentially happy; from the inside out! Yes, it’s your body’s way to beat depression and anxiety. Although you are putting your body under physical stress, the stress on your mind disappears. You begin to think clearer.

I’m an “Habitual” runner, and an early bird. If I don’t do it first thing in the morning, I find it hard to feel awake. No doubt, the big shot of oxygen I get to my brain because of the faster blood supply around my body, makes me alert, makes my organs healthy and working, makes my heart muscle stronger, improves the quality of my blood plasma, strengthens my vagus-nerve, keeps my digestive system regular, will help me manage menopause symptoms when they arrive and keeps me lean. After 2 hours, I start my weight training for muscle building. Stronger muscles is the best anti-aging bio-hack. Having muscle-mass on your body will ensure you will stay mobile and injury free from falls as you age. Stronger muscles means stronger bones and a healthy diet. And, well, are muscles on your body just aesthetically pleasing? Muscles are the exact opposite of fat and are metabolically active. So a muscular body burns more calories at rest. I have 2 active rest days for stretching exercises, albeit after a run/walk in my barefoot shoes, and sleep early for recovery.

A lot of my clients who don’t understand the value of daily physical exercise make the excuse that they don’t have the time to do it, or see it as another chore. Probably there is another reason for the lack of enthusiasm for exercise. Perhaps you weren’t good at P.E. at school? Perhaps you’re embarrassed to run or swim because of poor body- image? Perhaps it’s low self-worth; you don’t value yourself on a subconscious level.

Making time for daily exercise is an act of holistic self-love. The ROI is 100% and it’s all yours! If you have children, they will most likely be physically active as they see you prioritising it. Being sedentary for most of the day will give you disease as you are not using the machine that you have been gifted with; your body.

If you are having difficulty with fitting in physical exercise in to your daily routine, or simply want to discuss your deep desire to start an activity, then schedule an appointment. Let’s talk about your health.

Looking forward,

Sonia Salim

Is there such a thing as super-food?

Dear Reader,
You will have noticed that I haven’t put many pictures of fruit and vegetables on my website. Albeit: I’ve pictures up of delicious desserts and flamboyant, fancy coffee!

Depending on the occasion, they all are superfoods! Fruit and veggies, cake and coffee. Super food can be subjective.

Yes. Of course wellness and well-being are all about eating whole foods first. The primary sources of nutrition that are always superfoods are those grown in the sun, soil and on trees; that have been made with the help of birds, butterflies and bees.

If you sign-up for coaching sessions for any of of the problems mentioned on the mind-map, natural superfoods are what you will be eating.
No doubt.

However food is medicine. The poison is in the dose. And we are more than just a body. Coaching through a Being-Well lens means knowing when to have your cake guilt-free, because I know how hard it is to make switches in your diet when you eat for health’s sake. Giving up on your daily biscuit at tea time can be depressing. It weighs on your mental health. It can even lead to a tantrum.

If you learn not to gratify your desires instantly, and know the occasions of when you can have creamy, dreamy pudding, then temptations won’t govern your mind. Our sessions together will help train your mind to be patient by recognising your triggers and eat with intention to heal.
