Trending now: Electrolyte balance.
How do you picture your physical body?
Do you see it through the aesthetic lens focusing on your colour and body composition? Do you regard it as a perfect machine in design and motion that needs to be looked after to keep on working?
“The picture of perfect health!” This is the aim for most of us as we zoom on in life, especially in our latter years. Which is why most of us who do follow a daily exercise routine, like’s to try any health trend we read about.
Did you realise that the body generates electricity to keep the signals running for communication between neurons and protons to make everything in your body moving smoothly?
Electrolytes are mineral salts that generate the electrical current in your body. They dissolve in the water that your body contains, (the human body is 70% water.) They regulate the chemical reactions taking place right now, and help maintain the function of your cells, and make sure neurotransmitters work properly.
The minerals that are electrolytes are Sodium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and bicarbonate. If you’re eating a healthy whole foods-plant based diet, you will be replenishing your electrolytes constantly. If you’re consuming a highly processed diet, the boxes may say that minerals and vitamins are added but how well your body absorbs them for function is questionable; leaving you dehydrated.

Fundamentally, that’s exactly what being dehydrated means; not having enough water and minerals in the body to conduct the body’s essential functions. Minerals and water exit the body through urination, defecation, and sweating. On a mundane level, we all do this daily. However if you are exercising for over an hour daily, living in a hot climate, and hopefully visiting the loo on the regular, then you need to replenish your body with water consistently throughout the day anyway, and perhaps with a pinch of pink salt and lemon juice. If you engage in prolonged fasting then you should open your fast with such a drink, or coconut water, or fresh yogurt drinks. Interestingly, lemon-salt water, coconut water, and fresh yogurt drinks are staples in hot countries. Fruits and vegetables contain electrolytes and are 99% water. Bananas, Dates, Kiwi’s and figs are packed with Magnesium and Potassium and with just the right amounts with water. Lemons have Calcium, as do dark leafy greens. Don’t worry about the fructose in fruit. Your body will use that to combat fatigue readily and not store it.
It’s also recommended that you begin your day hydrating with natural mineral water or water with lemon and a pinch of pink salt added. If you’re out on a long distant run, or sweat excessively during training sessions in the summer, then you want to keep such a drink with you. If you’re running a long distance race, marathon or iron man training, mountain climbing or trail hiking, natural electrolytes are easy to carry and should be your choice over artificial energy drinks. If you’re hospitalized, it’s better to eat fruit too over glucose filled drinks. That’s why a bag of grapes have been a great British tradition when visiting someone ill in the hospital! Instant energy that is also healing.
There are signs and symptoms for dehydration; fatigue, muscle cramps, insomnia, excessive hunger, palpitations, constipation and vertigo. When you visit the doctor for an illness, they will most likely test your urine for electrolyte imbalance and infections.

I know that simple water doesn’t slake my thirst during the summer. That’s probably why nature produces a cornucopia of fruit throughout the summer season. I live in a hot climate, and endure hot temperatures for 9 months a year. That doesn’t stop me from running every morning nor does it stop me from weight training sans air conditioning. I sweat a lot! So I drink 2 glasses of natural mineral water, one with lemon and pink salt added. I’m also an avid coffee drinker so I make sure I have enough water after my coffee or add ice to my americano to keep the hydration up. I also enjoy a cup of yogurt 2 times a day; once added to my protein smoothie in the morning along with bananas and dates, and once for dinner with sunflower seeds added. I keep checking the colour of my urine; if it’s dark yellow, then I know I need more hydration. If it’s light yellow or colourless then I know I’m well hydrated. Excess salts are filtered through the kidneys and urinated out of the body. Overall, keeping hydrated with natural electrolytes and water throughout the day will keep you disease free as much as possible and live a normal pain-free life.
