Picky-Eating

Picky-Eating

A parent’s daily frustration with their teen? An aging parent’s changing taste buds? Today’s health-fad encouraging restricting a macronutrient? What is it?

Picky-Eating is a term coined to describe those moments when food is down right refused because the taste, texture and smell and combinations of food do not appeal. There are a few situations when this can occur, and do seem to be rooted psychologically or emotionally. Feeling bored at the sight of the same dish that your child couldn’t get enough off, feeling grossed out at the smell of fish that was baked instead of fried, finding hair in your food and gagging, mushy porridge, the smell of bananas, too spicy-hot in spite of containing zero chili’s; these are some of the gripes about food I get to hear.

Emotional eating talks of eating without thinking too much about what and how much is on your plate. However when you refuse a meal because it’s unappealing only to you, then it did trigger something in you that made you feel like not having it. If only one could be triggered to not eat a plate of hot french-fries in the same way, one would lose those extra 8 pounds that just won’t go. Yes, the mind does boggle, but the reactions are quick.

It does sound like a gut-brain phenomenon. Perhaps you don’t possess certain gut bacteria that make certain smells and food combinations attractive to you. Gut bacteria keeps on shifting as we age which is why we can not stomach or digest certain tastes as we age. I for one at age 50 can’t digest heavily spiced meaty meals or deep-fried fare; except those plate of hot French fries. There’s so substitute for the smell! Otherwise it’s hard to digest, and feels like it’s just sitting there. For sure, hormonal changes, pathogenic gut bacteria depletion and commensal bacteria increasing means a shift in taste buds. All our internal bits and bobs are intricately connected.

The gut-brain connection that gives rise to picky-eating is exhibited in children with autism who really can’t help but not like certain textures and food combinations or grains touching their meat for example. People who suffer from auto-immune  disorders or who are naturally atopic,  already have formed restrictive eating habits in order to lower inflammation and calm their immune systems. This of course is a positive habit. If you are a picky-eater and are looking to improve your gut health so that you can enjoy a bountiful diet as the seasons intended, don’t hesitate to book an appointment with me today! Is there such a thing as super-food?

Dear Reader,
You will have noticed that I haven’t put many pictures of fruit and vegetables on my website. Albeit: I’ve pictures up of delicious desserts and flamboyant, fancy coffee!

Depending on the occasion, they all are superfoods! Fruit and veggies, cake and coffee. Super food can be subjective.

Yes. Of course wellness and well-being are all about eating whole foods first. The primary sources of nutrition that are always superfoods are those grown in the sun, soil and on trees; that have been made with the help of birds, butterflies and bees.

If you sign-up for coaching sessions for any of of the problems mentioned on the mind-map, natural superfoods are what you will be eating.
No doubt.

However food is medicine. The poison is in the dose. And we are more than just a body. Coaching through a Being-Well lens means knowing when to have your cake guilt-free, because I know how hard it is to make switches in your diet when you eat for health’s sake. Giving up on your daily biscuit at tea time can be depressing. It weighs on your mental health. It can even lead to a tantrum.

If you learn not to gratify your desires instantly, and know the occasions of when you can have creamy, dreamy pudding, then temptations won’t govern your mind. Our sessions together will help train your mind to be patient by recognising your triggers and eat with intention to heal.
