- Gut Health: there’s a garden inside of you.
With all the information nowadays circulating about Gut health, you must be wondering what to do with it. So good health and therefore disease all start in the gut; the small intestines, the stomach and the colon. You eat, you digest, you excrete. However, the gut is a complex place, home to bacteria, viruses, protea, and fungi. It’s also home to the immune system. So the type of bacteria living in your gut influences whether a virus will spread in your body, activating the immune system to inflame the body and fight it off. A strong and healthy gut or lots of good bacteria, will be able to keep viruses dormant and won’t let new ones survive in its colony. But, if you have more bad bacteria-known as dysbiosis, then most likely you will get sick often, have a weakened immune system and even wake up some bad genes that you’ve inherited. If you have been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, then you will have a leaky gut. Which means the holes in your oesophagus have grown wide open and leak out undigested food particles in to your circulatory system. Undigested food particles are toxic; so the immune system begins to attack some part of your body, as it seeks to get rid of those toxins. Allergies are also a manifestation of poor gut health. If you are gaining weight because of an autoimmune disorder such as Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, I would examine and recommend changes to your diet and lifestyle practices to calm the inflammation, so your immune system stops attacking your thyroid gland, and your metabolism becomes effective again leading to weight-loss.
Sometimes clients have poor gut health in general and find once they take a probiotic supplement, and eat the foods rich in fibre (prebiotics) that feed the growth of friendly bacteria, you will find that your hormones also balance, and you start to lose the kilos that didn’t budge before.
The gut also influences the brain. You’ve used the expression “Gut feeling” before ? Whatever thoughts you might be having are felt in your stomach. From butterflies, to anxiety, to courage. The friendly or unfriendly bacteria also influence your thoughts and actions. Perhaps it even influences your mindset.
